Chinam's Hong

One of the earliest substantial Chinese houses built in Hong Kong. The picture was published as a lithograph in London by Messrs. Day & Son and and published as notes from Chinese Architecture in in 1851. According to Gutzlaff, Chinam, alias Chan Akuen, was a Cantonese capitalist who attempted to establish himself in Hong Kong. The company name was Tun Wo. In June 1843 he bought Marine Lot 54 from Richard Oswald paying $8,000. He proceeded to build a large Hong in the Chinese style but before the building was completed he died in July 1844.

Lot 54 is at the location of present day The Center on Queen's Road Central.

Hi Annelise,

I emailed Jonathan Wattis to check he's ok with his content appearing here. He replied that we can continue to show it, but asks that we:

"[...] kindly attribute picture and notes, "Courtesy of Wattis Fine Art" and include a link back to our website. This is for your website but not for printed publication."

You've got the link already, please could you add the attribution text?

Thanks & regards,

David
