Victoria Lodge was built in 1895 for Sir Paul Chater, and designed by Leigh and Orange (who later designed Marble Hall).
The lodge consisted of 2 adjoining houses.
At first it was rented to a German Businessman and his sons. In 1908 it was sold to the French Government, to become the official residence of the French Consul-General.
In 1881, Nicolaus August Siebs joined the German firm Siemann and Co. and by 1884 was listed as a "principal resident" of Hong Kong. Mr. and Mrs. Siebs were living in the Albany. It appears that when Victoria Lodge was built, the Siebs just moved up the hill a bit. Mrs. N. A. Siebs and a Miss Heidelberg are listed there in 1899.
Edo Albert Hermann and Hans August Siebs, "clerks" at Siemssen & Co. lived in Victoria Lodge in 1902/3.
In 1908, the Siebs, after about 28 years, returned to Europe permanently and H.A. Siebs took over the Hong Kong office.
Continue to 1914, 'at the time of the liquidation of the company', and H.A. Siebs is still the Hong Kong partner.
