Hong Kong Land Auction 1841
My great great grandfather, Charles Henry Hart, was one of the original successful bidders for marine lots during the first auction of Hong Kong land in 1841. He was based in Macau for many years and ran a trade between Macau, Hong Kong, (probably also Canton) Calcutta and Mauritius. I have come across an interesting reference to the Black Swan, a trading schooner owned by him, which was instrumental in rescuing the shipwrecked crew of the Nerbudda off the coast of Formosa in 1841.

Charles Henry married Areina Maria Pereira in Macau in 1839, but I have been unable to discover any information about her or her family.  Any help in researching Macau records would be much appreciated.

I am interested in any references to Charles Henry, or to his son Alexander Hart, born in Macau in 1850, who was a Commander with the Irrawaddy Flotilla before moving with his family to Paulo Bukom, Singapore in 1883 shortly before his death.

Baptised 4 December 1808 St. Mary's Woodbridge Suffolk son of George Hart brewer and Catherine. Note in baptism record late Crackenthorpe (his mother's maiden name)

Siblings of Charles Henry Hart and baptised St. Mary's Woodbridge

George Crackenthorpe Hart baptised 26 April 1807

Catherine Mary Hart baptised 8 April 1810

George Hart married Catherine Crackenethorpe 12 March 1806 St Stephen's Norwich Norfolk

Thanks for this information about Charles Henry Hart's baptism. Can you tell me where you found the record?

I have the Crackenthorpes, but it looks like the "member trees" have the wrong father! It looks like George was born 1785, but I can't find any record on Ancestry.

Do you have any leads on Macau records?

Thanks for your help.

I have membership of several genealogy services. I found that record on Find My Past.

Never trust any trees on Ancestry unless you have checked the records yourself.

So I am learning!  Find My Past are taking a "maintenance break" so I'll check that out tomorrow. Very helpful thanks!

If you have any leads on Charles Henry in Hong Kong or the Far East I would be really interested.

Many thanks

Captain Hart bought Marine Lot 38 for GBP57 in 1841. ML 38 was in Wanchai on the North side of Queens Road East. A map and more information can be seen here

Got it thanks!  Any idea how to research his Portuguese wife from Macau?

Search for Macau at for a couple of tips.
