On behalf of Professor Togo Tsukahara of Kobe University, I posted three photos of his grandfather Mr Kichinosuke Tsukahara who had been in Hong Kong a number of times during the Japanese occupation:

Mr Kichinosuke held the position of Chief Administrator (事務長) in the Japanese Navy and the first photo shows him photographed with the Navy Commander General (大熊司令官).  From the Internet, the Commander General might be 日本海軍香港基地司令官大熊譲少將.

Professor Togo Tsukahara is looking for any information related to his grandfather, for example, where were the photos taken (especially the location of the 香港海軍下士官兵集會所), any information about the Chinese Mr Lam (林江蒿) and Mr Chan (陳悅治), and if the children of Mr Lam and Mr Chan in the third photo are still alive in Hong Kong?

CM, thanks to you and Professor Togo Tsukahara for posting this. I've been hoping that we could hear from some of the Japanese families who were in Hong Kong during 1941-45, to add their experiences to the collection of diaries we have of those years. So I am very pleased to see these photos.

Moddsey has identified the building in the first two photos as the Sailors Home and Mission to Seamen.

Dear David,

I would like to convey Professor Togo Tsukahara's gratitude to you and the Gwulo community for identifying the location of the two photos of his grandfather:

"It is amazing that the building is identified... My aunts (all uncles have already passed away) and some cousins must be delighted.  Please convey my gratitude to David."

I have also updated the dates of birth and death of Kichinosuke Tsukahara based on information provided by Professor Togo Tsukahara.

Hi CM,

Thats great to have the extra information, thanks. Do we know roughly when Mr Kichinosuke Tsukahara was in Hong Kong? It sounds from the initial description as though he wasn't based here, but just made occasional visits, is that right?

If Professor Tsukhara heard any of his grandfather's memories of Hong Kong, they'd be very interesting to hear too.

Regards, David
