The photo: 1955 Queen's Road Central

1955 Queens Road Central

This week's photo was for a customer who needed a 1950s view of Queen's Road Central to include in a booklet they're producing. Click here for more information about the scene, and find out why any nervous readers should avoid that car!

Please help #1: Rebuild the TST KCR Terminus

The goal is to recreate the old TST KCR Terminus as a 3D model, by using modern computer software to process old photos of the building. I've got the software, but I need more photos of the terminus building, and tips for any films that with scenes that show the building.

As a taster, here's a simple model built from modern photos of the remaining tower:

If you're a long-term reader, you might think this sounds familiar. You're right! I first tried this in 2008 but without much success. Now I'm back for another try with updated software. Click here for more information about this project.

Please help #2: A new decade of Jurors

Another long-term project, we started this one back in 2010 with the goal to type up all the Jurors Lists. They're valuable tools for anyone researching family history in Hong Kong, and much easier to use after they've been converted to text.

Last week, volunteer Moly finished typing the last pages of the 1919 list. You can see it online at: http://gwulo.com/jurors-list-1919

So now we're on to our fourth decade. If you can spare 30 minutes to type up a page of the 1920 list, you'll help a lot of people. eg Looking at the 1894 list we started with, I can see it has been viewed over 4,500 times since it was typed up in 2010.

A grumble

On the one hand October marks the start of the government's Heritage Fiesta 2015. It aims to "showcase the rich heritage of Hong Kong".

But October is also the month we've learned that the few remaining old postboxes are now "inappropriate" and their royal crowns must be covered up.

Let the government know we should treasure and showcase the limited historic items that remain, not damage and hide them. Click here for details
