It's quite difficult to place it accurately now as the whole of the King's Park Rise area has undergone tremendous development, but when it was just the four government blocks known as King's Park Flats, there was a small cave not far below and to the left of the southernmost block. We knew it as candy cave and most of the kids living in the Flats were familiar with it. It always struck me as an odd place to put a tunnel,(and tunnel it was not a cave)but then during the occupation I will assume there were no buildings on the rise.

Richard, thanks for writing in. Was it a simple, straight tunnel into the hillside, or anything more complex?
Tunnel at King's Park Rise
There were actually two tunnels, one called Candy and the other called Twister. They were not very long (although as children they did seem so). Twister got its name from the fact that it had a curve to it whereas Candy just went straight into the hillside. It was always assumed that they dated from the war. Lower down the hill in an easterly direction (where the King's Park Recreaton Centre was built) used to also be a wasteground which had walls built of granite blocks which where again assumed to be part of some military related/war works.
Still Exist?
Has anybody checked up on this? I know it seems unlikely, but do these still exist?
