The Queen's Recreation Ground Ordinance of 1898 designated the piece of Crown Land at Causeway Bay as an open space and reserved for public recreation.

Over the years, the grounds have been allocated to various clubs and schools and used for polo, football, tennis, cricket and baseball.

Post-war, the western portion of the grounds was temporarily used by Causeway Bay Camp and as a Vehicle Detention Pound (later for Central Library and a Temporary Playground etc.), northeast section became known as the Royal Naval Sports Ground (today's Causeway Bay Sports Ground) whilst the southeast portion was allocated to the Chinese Recreation Club for expansion of its sporting facilities.

As a sports field for public use, only Causeway Bay Sports Ground remains.

Hi there,

This location was generally being called 陸軍球場 (Army's Playground) by we locals before its rebuilt.  I remember my old man told me owing to its tie with British Military the site and its neighbourhood had been the target of Japanese artilery as well as airforce boomers.

That was his own first hand experience as Grandpa and family had been trying to take shelter in a shophouse in Tai Hang for a time.  They had to turn tail when booming become severe.  Eventually they moved to St Francis' Square in Wanchai for a while, before moving somewhere else.

Best Regards,

T
