The Bowrington Canal Air Raid Pen-Shelters were built in great haste in October 1940 on the western side of the Canal between Hennessy and Leighton Roads. At the time of construction, each "pen" would accommodate 120 persons. The pen-shelters were made out of hollow concrete blocks, making it blast proof and splinter proof against any high explosive of 500 lbs and exploding not nearer than 50 feet away.
