Michael Alderton (essarem) notes that this informal, late February 1962 photograph of General M.A. Cohen (left) with his friend, Hong Kong merchant and China trader, Paul D. Alderton, was taken at the corner of the garden wall of Beach Mansions where it looks down upon the northern end of Stanley Main Beach, and out across Tai Tam Bay (see: 1960 - view along Stanley Main Beach | Gwulo). This section of the garden-cum-boundary wall, located on the edge of the plot of land comprising 11A & 11B Stanley Beach Road, and representing a faux battlement decorated, at this point, with a ye olde lamp and an impractical loop-hole, sits atop the substantial 1930’s retaining wall, which was originally associated with the lower terrace garden for a two-story, grey-granite, art-deco mansion. This grand, old, original residence, named 景春別墅 (Ging Chun – Scenic Spring - Villa), was situated at 9 Stanley Beach Road.
The above image was captured by Jim Robinson, U.S. newsman and a resident, at the time, in one of the six apartments that make up Beach Mansions.
