British-Made Comet Mark I Tank

British-Made Comet Mark I Tank

The Comet was the last medium tank produced by the British Army during the Second World War. It first saw combat in early 1945. Its engine produced a maximum of 600 horsepower at 2,550 rpm. The tank had armour up to 10 centimetres thick, carried a crew of five, and had a gross weight of 32.7 tons (33,225 kilograms).

Its turret was equipped with a 77 mm gun fitted with a muzzle brake, together with two 7.92 mm machine guns as secondary weapons.

During the Korean War (1950–1953), the British Army brought a number of Comet tanks to Hong Kong. Only one was subsequently retained. It remained stationed at Shek Kong Camp until the Royal Hong Kong Regiment was disbanded in 1995.
