When Hong Kong was established as a port in 1841, with only a population of approximately 7,450 on Hong Kong Island, of whom 2,000 lived on the water.

Due to population growth, the mountains, rivers, and wells could no longer meet the water needs of residents and businesses.

The Pok Fu Lam Reservoir, the first reservoir in Hong Kong.

Construction work commenced in 1860 and was completed in 1863. The second reservoir was commissioned in 1877.

Lugard Road Waterfall is located at the junction of Lugard Road and Harlech Road on Victoria Peak.

The Waterfall flows down the Pok Fu Lam Reservoir, the Water Supplies Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all waterworks and aqueducts.

Hong Kong's aqueduct system is primarily for rainwater collection and is not designed for hiking or public use.

Of the original 32 aqueduct arch bridges on the Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Aqueduct, 16 remain after reconstruction or damage. They are primarily constructed with granite bases and canal covers, with red brick lining the sides, and each is engraved with a number.

Of the entire aqueduct system, only aqueduct arch bridge number 9 is classified as a statutory monument.
