High Water Marker, Lei Yue Mun

Plate fixed to a pillar in Lei Yue Mun Village. It is located behind the seafood restaurants in a sort of backyard near the water, usually not accessible to the public (we saw it when we lost our way).

It gives maximum seawater levels in relation to the Chart Datum in meters (m. C.D.). Chart Datum is a defined seawater level, used as a reference for nautical depth. In Hong Kong, the Chart Datum is about 1,5 m below the Mean Sea Level.

The highest flood level was reached during Typhoon Wanda in 1962. The water level then was about 1,5 m above floor level.
