This is the second of two photos of the mine sweeper, USS Avocet in the 1928 album of William Richmond Fell. The naval record of Avocet going aground is as follows:
At 2015 on 26 August 1928, Avocet grounded on a sand bar. With the wind clocked at Force 8, Avocet remained at the mercy of the tempest for the rest of the night, but fortunately sustained no major damage. When the storm abated, help soon arrived, with Commander Aircraft Squadrons, Asiatic, Cmdr. Richmond K. Turner, flying his pennant in Bittern (AM-26), taking charge of salvage work.
I don't think this photo was taken at exactly the same time as WRF's previous photo. I can't see an anchor line and nor can I see any land in the distance. It is possible that both photos are "official" photos. As I said in my previous post, I can't find a record of Avocet going aground in 1929. I'm not even sure if this photo was taken at Chefoo.
