hermes w h w

Another photo from an unsorted group in William Richmond Fell's collection. The legend on the back reads: "Hermes oiler & mainland back left. Destroyers and sloops in foreground." The name "Hermes" was given to several ships. I believe this Hermes was the first ship to be designed as an aircraft carrier. She did serve in the China station during the 1920s, but I'm not sure if that date is correct for this photo, even though WRF was serving in the China station in 1928 and 1929. WRF adds the comment: "Almost all of W-H-W Island Not Wanted" I'm not sure what he means by that. It may refer to a later date when Britain gave up Waihaiwei.
