Balaenoptera
An immature whale of this species was found in the water under a wharf at Connaught Road West on April 12, 1955. Apparently it had found its way in between the piles of the wharf during high tide and become trapped as the water receded. After being shot by the Marine Police, the entire specimen was handed over to the University of Hong Kong’s Department of Biology for teaching purposes.
An illustrated account regarding the landing and dissection of this fin back whale was published in Spectrum (the magazine of the HKU Science Society) No. 4 in May 1955.
