This photo was taken from the Dairy Farm 1968 Annual Report. The caption claims this two-story cow shed/barn is one of the few cow sheds “in the world” that can accommodate dairy cows on both floors. The total capacity is 160 cattle, 80 on the ground floor and 80 on the second floor. The shed/barn was located just south of the Dairy Farm office in PokFuLam on the other side of PokFuLam Road across from the PokFuLam Village. It was sandwiched between PokFuLam Road and Victoria Road. This 2-story shed/barn shows up on the upper right-hand side of the photo of Dairy Farm I uploaded recently. (Dairy Farm in PokFuLam in 1967(part3) between label E and label F) It is believed that this shed/barn was built in the early sixties. I can only confirm that it was already in existence in 1963. It has such a commanding view facing the west that I envy all the dairy cows there in the sixties. They were able to enjoy the beautiful sunset every night. Of course, this cow shed/barn is long gone, and the whole area is now covered with thick vegetation. To my surprise, this patch of land has not been developed into multi-story high rises.

Dairy Farm Herd Inventory in the Late Sixties
This information is from a Hong Kong English newspaper article profiling Dairy Farm. Part of this newspaper article mentions the size of the dairy cow herd with Dairy Farm. Since the newspaper clipping is from the late sixties or early seventies, the size of the herd mentioned must be referring to the size at that time. The article, in part, states the following:
“And 300 men earn their livelihood there by caring for these cattle, which produce the major quantity of fresh milk consumed in the Colony.”
“The present area of the Farm is about 280 acres. The cattle population includes 1,100 animals in milk – Holsteins and Fresians, with some Ayrshires.”
“ In 1886, the herd numbered only 80 cows and the company’s paid-up capital was $30,000.”
