This photo of 20 years ago showed a roasted/preserved (meat), tea restaurant with open-air seating, which served BBQ pigs, roasted ducks, chicken, preserved meats etc.
Typical Hongkong style restaurant, more of grassroots, 'kaifong' (neighbourhood) feel.
This location has been within the SOHO (South of Hollywood Road) district, whose name was coined since c.1996.
As openrice.com reviews, it had opened there until at least 2008. After, same no. 58 has been a Vietnam restaurant for a recent decade. What an evolution.
So there is really a world of difference between now and then (one and a half century apart). Photo here : https://gwulo.com/media/26767
It used to be much more jammed and bustling around this road area, near a rare, six-way junction on slopes. There had been some street market full of hawkers stalls, which was barely accessible for any motor vehicles, I think even by mid 70s. [1]
Such street markets are common in old Hong Kong. Similar ones on Centre Street, Water Street in Western District, both slopes are rather steep. Refer e.g. https://gwulo.com/media/39029.
A photo took from mid-levels which overlooks this area pre SOHO is also available in gwulo : https://gwulo.com/media/23528
Interesting discussions about a roasted food shop have been done in gwulo before. Recap : https://gwulo.com/media/22653
notes
[1] some successful 'reordering' of Peel Street reported in both Kung Sheung Yat Po and SCMP (Dissenting voice in 'success' story) on 1980-5-15; Stauton Street was mentioned also.
I happened to read that efforts to regulate hawkers in these steep streets had started much earlier (SCMP 1963-10-18)
