The Tanka are not Chinese, but aborigines of the Orient, the "water people" of South China.  

 

They rarely settle ashore.

 

They have been for centuries an outcast people, largely illiterate and racially exclusive, but fiercely proud.

 

They have an inherent suspicion of "land people."  The sea gypsies have a saying: "We always sail away from land troubles."

 

The floating city of Yaumati  provides anchorages for countless thousands of Tanka.
