This photo of Saint Stephen’s Church School at Bonham Road was taken by my uncle in the late fifties or early sixties. This used to be the site of Christian Mission House which was demolished in the early fifties and Saint Stephen’s Church School was built on this site in 1953. This school was run by the Anglican Church. The address is #71 Bonham Road. At that time, the school consisted of only kindergarten and primary school. The secondary school section was not added until 1968. This photo shows the primary school building on the left and the kindergarten section on the right. The main entrance from Bonham Road is in the middle. The primary school building is rectangular shape and is 3 stories high with an open rectangular shape patio in the middle. It was organized into the south wing and the north wing separated by the open patio. The south wing which you see in the photo faces HKU and the north wing faces Pokfulam Road. There is a basement where the gym and the bathrooms are located. The ground floor on the south wing is for the first-grade classes and the ground floor on the north wing is for the second-year grade classes. Likewise, on the second floor, the south wing is for the third grade and the north wing is for the fourth grade. On the top floor. The south wing is for the fifth grade and the north wing is for the sixth grade.
The kindergarten section was housed in a large 2 stories building with the lower kindergarten classes on the ground floor and the upper kindergarten classes on the second floor. In between the primary school section and the kindergarten section is the playground with a large banyan tree in the middle.
There was an old church next to the kindergarten by Pokfulam Road. This was the first Chinese Anglican Church in Hong Kong and was built at this site as early as 1888. It was finally demolished in 1964? to give way for the addition of the high school section and the high school section took the address of the church and became # 62 PokfuLam Road. The school seal was also changed from “Saint Stephen’s Church Primary School & Kindergarten” to “Saint Stephen’s Church College”.
