Hello again Garry.
I’ve been scanning thro this photo and trying to match it with your previous photo to find your father and have settled on either far right front row or second in from left - middle row. ( Probably both wrong). I suggest the writing on photo says he is part of 2 platoon - 65th Training Regiment- Royal Armoured Corps- Catterick Camp Yorkshire. The figs.54.07 probably indicate that was conscripted/ enlisted the first half of April 1954, I believe this photo is taken at the end of 6 weeks basic training so - end of May/ early June 1954.Catterick. Do you know if he was then trained as Gunner- radio operator - or maybe Tank driver while in Hong Kong. Note the soldier second in from left middle row hasn’t got his white webbing belt on—wonder why.?
Here's a good description of life in the 65th Training Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps, at Catterick Camp, that was probably similar to Trooper Robert Cully's experiences:
Sorry it took so long to resond. My father is in the middle row, 4th from the left.
I know he said he was always driving the trucks, basically he could drive any vehicle they asked him too. He told stories of driving tanks, also told a story of driving a truck down a mountain during a monsoon. Apparently they were doing an excercise a a senior officer was asking questions why they had not moved equipment down the mountain, due to weather they were holding off. The higher rank (I think it was a Major) told the ones in charge that "Cully" will get this down the mountain and he jumbed into the front of the truck with my dad and off they went. My dad said he wasnt in a position to question he did what he was told and got them down the mountain, however he said is was touch and go, they kept the doors open in case they slipped off the cliff side.
