The guy's holding a branch without flowers or leaves. It looked similar to the vine type branches of Pyrostegia venusta.

The Chinese name of the flower Pyrostegia venusta is 砲仗花, meaning firecracker flower.

I never squished them myself, so don't know if it indeed would making a popping sound, or it was some other flower that was used.

The little kid was squishing some flower buds to make firecracker-like popping sounds, while the man faked the motion of throwing firecrackers to scare some onlookers.

Similar shaped but much larger flower buds of trumpet honeysuckle shown below. Regular sized honeysuckle buds probably would 'pop' when squished.
