Clear contrast between the relatively wealthy family on the left and the four children on the right by the boxes.  Curiously, the words on the boxes say they belong to the Yu family from the region of 四邑 in Guangdong province, and they are for the purpose of letter writing.  So it seems the father earns his living by writing letters for illiterate people on the street.

analysis tennis ball. thanks. I was wondering what the roped poles to the right of the children are for?

They are tools/apparatus of coolies. It was very popular view in 50/60s that coolies in the streets waited to be hired with them.
