After contemplating the dragon design carved onto the rifle butt, which you provided, I am left wondering whether the rifle in question is a Canadian designed and manufactured WW1 Ross rifle; examples of which were issued to some southern Chinese forces during the mid-1920’s. If so, I would be very interested to learn what you know about the history of the rifle in question. I apologise to my Gwulo colleagues for hijacking a post that more properly relates to dragon designs.
Sorry, all I know about the rifle is in my post at https://gwulo.com/node/59946. The information provided about the rifle suggests it to be a Lee Metford, circa 1900. I can't even remember where I saw it!
Hello again gw. Many thanks for your prompt, informative reply. I can now note that the rifle in question is most likely a British Lee Metford Mark II (1895), the forerunner to the British Lee Enfield Mark I (1895). Certainly not a Ross, unfortunately. Apologies again to you and our fellow Gwulo colleagues for this interruption to the timely dragon theme.
