Typical rental units in the 1960s and 1970s. The owner or a renter divided the house into small units separated by wooden walls with a gap between the top and the ceiling. They are called plank-divided rooms 板間房. A house may have 8 or 10 units like this. Each room may cost say 20 or 30 dollars per month. At the end of the hall, there is what look like a "common room".
