Michael Alderton notes: Below is a U.S. newspaper article reporting on the simultaneous fighting on two fronts, to the north and to the west of Canton:

“24th April 1923. Canton. Sun Yat Sen Routs Foe. On the North River front, defeated Kwangsi troops commanded by General Shen are fleeing in all directions, while the Cantonese forces of Sun Yat Sen have abandoned the pursuit and are advancing to attack the north railway front, which is the headquarters of one of the leaders of the coalition opposing Sun Yat Sen. Along the West River front, the retreat of Sun Yat Sen’s opponents there has degenerated into a rout and the disorganized forces are fleeing toward the frontier of Kwangsi. Says Dr Sun: ‘General Shen attacked Canton upon receiving secret orders from the Northern Government. Fortunately, we defeated him and he is being pursued by our army’

Michael Alderton notes: Below is a Canadian newspaper article mentioning Adjutant General Cohen leading Republican troops, and being awarded the Order of the Striped Tiger by Generalissimo Sun Yat-sen:

“9th May 1923. Edmonton, Alberta. Morris Cohen. Gen. Kow Hen China Army? President of China Presents Local Man with ‘Order of the Tiger’. General Kow Hen, in charge of Republican troops in Southern China, is none other than the daring Edmontonian. Cohen was seeking concessions in China running into millions of dollars and including new railways and other development schemes. He was the only white man present at a meeting of powerful Chinese heads from all over the Dominion at Winnipeg last summer, and at that time he was elected to an important executive position. It is now known also that Cohen has been decorated with the ‘Order of the Tiger’ by the Chinese president, and that he holds a high place in the councils of the republican government.”

Michael Alderton notes: With battles being waged on two separate fronts, Adjutant General Cohen might be expected to have been seen leading major formations of troops due to the fact that an Adjutant General, serving on the field of battle, might, on occasions, be required to serve his Commander-in-chief by exercising delegated authority on his behalf.
