Just curious to know if it is possible to identify the ship in the background - the funnel design would designate it as one of the American President Liners.
The vessel is most likely to be either the PRESIDENT POLK or PRESIDENT MUNROE two of seven C3 cargo passenger ships built for APL in the early 1940s, which served as US Navy attack transports during WW II. Whilst the US Navy retained five of the class these two vessels were returned to APL after the war.
The PRESIDENT MUNROE sold December 1965. PRESIDENT POLK sold July 1965.
The ads are actually the same in both photos. There is no street lamp in front of the ‘Dutch Baby’ ad in the opening photo so I would place it chronologically earlier than Andrew’s photo.
But look carefully at the first photo. It’s not normal.
The empty buses are stacked 3 deep nose to tail in the pedestrian part of the road and they are not going anywhere. The taxis are empty. This very busy part of Kowloon is just void of people, unlike the second photo. Is it just really early in the morning before rush hour? Or some other event? The October 1956 riots? Chinese New Year? In which case it was 18th February 1958 for the photo. Why did the photographer take that shot?
