After “meeting” each other on the Gwulo website and corresponding for ten years, Susann Lombeck, great-granddaughter of C.F.W. Petersen (proprietor of the German Tavern) and Jill Fell, great-granddaughter of John Olson (proprietor of the National Tavern) finally met in person on 30 May 2023, a fine English summer’s day. Susann’s grandmother was Louise Helen Bruhn (née Petersen) b. 1890, whose photographs of early Hong Kong also appear on the Gwulo site. Jill’s grandmother was Hannah Warren (née Olson) b. 1880, wife of Charles Warren, who founded the construction, sanitary ware and tile company, C.E. Warren & Co. Ltd. around 1900. Petersen and Olson were executors for each other. Both are buried in the Colonial Cemetery, Happy Valley.
