When Hong Kong surrendered to the Japanese on Christmas Day, December 25, 1941, my father became a prisoner of war. He was kept in the Shumshuipo POW camp until April 29th, 1944. On that day, he along with 47 Canadians and 137 Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corp prisoners were embarked on a ship called the Naura Maru bound for Japan.
Upon arrival in Moji, Japan on May 27, 1944, he was transported by train to Sendai Camp #2 to work at the Iwaki Coal Mine in a village called Yoshima.
This is a photo taken of the prisoners on Christmas Day 1944 and he is highlighted in the inset. In front of the prisoners are Red Cross parcels.
The photographer is unknown but the writing on the photo is my father's.
