Sun, 01/16/2022 - 17:39

This photo was in an album with other Hong Kong photos so I was assuming its an image of Hong Kong.

Can anyone verify what the image is of please? - there is no info on the back to help me.

Thank you!

Hi There,

Unable to identify the temple based on the photo, but the Advertisements (at least those with the biggest words) appears to be written in Cantonese dialect, thus the temple is likely located in a Cantonese speaking community.

Those on the ground looked like fishes.  At least the shape of them looked like fishes.  If this is the case, the temple is likely a Tin Hau Temple, or a Hung Sing Temple (both or sea\water related deities) as they are common along the coast.  Hence the fishes.

Hi Phil,

The ceremic decorations on the roof in this photo is not exactly the same as the current Tam Kung Temple.  But its proximity of the water made it very likely.  The coast had moved further out these days, owing to reclaimation.

The Tam Kung Temple under a refurbishment in 1987, and another in 2002 thus decorations may have been changed.  I am just uncertain.

Hi There,

Walked around the area late in the afternoon and took a few shots:

1.  At the back. Note the ventilation shafts on the roof:

The current temple was rebuilt in the recent decade or two, I believe.  Have to look it up further.  But they usually keep the granite parts and reuse them.  From the third photo, the building look very much like the old photo, but the ceremic decoration looked different.  The current ones are likely new.

Hi Moddsey,

I think you've got the right temple, as the highlighted markings on the sidewall near the sloped rooftop looked the same and the temples looked identical. The coastline had been extended somewhat in the right photo. The central figure on the rooftop in the left photo was just a guy holding up some decorations.

Noticed a 1970 Google Image of the Tam Kung Temple and the "Giant Frog Stone" at https://www.gettyimages.ca/detail/news-photo/pictured-here-is-the-giant-frog-stone-outside-the-tam-kung-news-photo/1125734764 The big stone on the shore and ground in later photos outside the temple entrance does not appear to have been retained.
