I recall an uninhabited island off Ceylon, familiarly known as "Snake Island", where snakes were regularly taken to be dumped, as the Buddhist religion forbids the killing of creatures. I don't know if Chinese Buddhists adhered to this rule so strictly, but maybe Waglan island was sometimes used for the same purpose.
