A copy of this photo was donated to the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, United States by Corporal Hiram Vance Boone, who served in the 612th Field Artillery Battalion (Pack), 5332nd Brigade (Provisional) in the China-India-Burma Theater of Operations. https://www.ww2online.org/image/street-scene-china-1945-4
I wonder how this photo came into possession of Cpl Boone. This was in the personal album of my father. I thought it was actually taken by my father as the photo was of relative poor quality. Can anyone related to Cpl Boone throw some light on it, please?
I found a copy of this photo recently, which is why I was searching for it. Unfortunately, I don't know its origin either. This copy might have been in the possession of Frank Chisari, an American soldier who was stationed in Kunming during WWII. He also adopted a child from Kunming. I don't know if one of them brought it to the United States, or perhaps they acquired the photo in the US because of their connection to Kunming. No idea.
On the back it reads: "Bank" street. Here are located all the banks of the city. china 1945
Thanks. With comments about the identical photos of East and West Pagodas that were in my father's possession as well another one donated to the American WII museum, I would agree that these two photos, and may be a few others too of identical size of approximately 2 inch-square, were indeed souvenirs sold to "foreigners".
