This photo also appears in the HSBC Collection of photos taken by W. P. Floyd. They own an album where the caption reads:
The Parade Ground, City Hall, & Cathedral. St Paul's Cathedral was built in 1847 and became the Diocesan Church of a Bishopric in 1849. A Chancel was added to it in 1872, but no sooner was this completed than the roof of the older structure was found to be eaten by white ants and is now (Feb 1873) undergoing repairs. The City Hall was built by public subscription in 1869, at a total cost of about $96,000, and was proved of much public value. It contains a Theatre, a Library of 8,000 volumes, a Museum (as yet unfilled) and capacious Ball and Banquet rooms. The lower part of the Parade Ground, which forms the foreground of the picture, is used as a Cricket field.
The repair work can be seen in the photo (a temporary additional roof was added). Additionally, the caption indicates that the photo was taken in February 1873.
