They haven't started the 2 Star Ferry Piers - which opened in 1957.
The old Chartered Bank Building is still there - the new one was a steel frame in 1957.
See the building on the reclamations in front of the Hong Kong Club? that's the entry gate for the trade fair of Hong Kong Products.
Bruce recorded elsewhere that he arrived in Hong Kong on Friday 16 August 1957. Virtually all his many photographs (of which he provided me with excellent notes) were printed by one of the photography shops in the town. They have scalloped edges - but this one and two others have straight cut edges so I suspect that they are commercial ones which he bought. On one or two of his own images taken between August 1957 and August 1958, the Star Ferry pier is in operation. Many thanks for your excellent observation and correction. I'll correct the date. Andrew

wanchai piers
One can see the Wanchai piers in the distance. The Tonnochy pier lit up with lights and the Stewart pier in front of it. The latter was built in 1956.
trade fair of Hong Kong Products
Trade fair of Hong Kong Products was held on Central reclaimed land in 1954, 1955 and 1956, usually starting in December.

As Marlowe pointed out, one can see the gate of the exhibition ground. A picture of the 1956 exhibition:
