This is the view from the Peak on a rather hazy day in October 1996. The large, flat area in the middle of the photo was a huge land reclamation scheme at the time. In the present it is the West Kowloon area. The area is now the location of the West Kowloon Cultural Centre, Austin, the Western Harbour Tunnel, and the International Commerce Centre. The very tall buildings in the Kowloon area which we see now were not there in 1996. The old airport at Kai Tak was still in use then, and the approach routes to the Airport needed to be clear. On the Hong Kong Island side of the photo, in the lower right, there are two apparently identical rectangular buildings under construction. When they were completed, they became the International Finance Centre. The one on the right in this photo is now the larger of the two towers. I was in Hong Kong in October 1996.
