1841年8月9日，建成中央監獄(Central Prison)，有兩排囚倉。
1860年，重建監獄，囚犯遷往昂船州躉船上。
1863年，建成中央監獄大樓，1900年易名為域多利監獄，2005年關閉。
1864年，建成總部營房大樓、A座和B座。
1905年，營房大樓加建一層。
1913年，中央裁判司署在位置重建，1979年關閉。
1914年，建成C座和D座。
1919年，建成北面的總部大樓。
1925年，建成西面的馬廐。
1941年，警署被日軍轟炸，其後用作日軍警署。
1995年9月8日，中區警署、域多利監獄和中央裁判司署列為法定古蹟。
2004年12月17日，警署關閉。
2010年，香港賽馬會公布將中區警署建築群活化為當代藝術中心。
2016年5月29日，已婚警員宿舍部份在維修後倒塌。

The Central Police Station Compound, located at the Hollywood Road, includes Central Police Station (1864-), Central Magistracy (1914-) and Victoria Prison (1863-). The oldest structure of the police station was built in 1864. The compound was declared to be monuments in 1995. In 2010, Hong Kong Jockey Club announced to conserve and revitalise the Central Police Station and transform it into a centre of heritage, arts and leisure. In 2016, during the ongoing revitalisation, part of the married inspectors’ quarters collapsed.
