I'm not much one for the SCMP, it rarely has anything I find interesting and takes me about 2 minutes to read. However, today was a bit of a bonus because it had a large article on a photo exhibition on at the HKU library (I think?). A collection of historical HK transport photos is on display until late June (you may find some to add to the KCR terminus project there, MrB?).
Secondly, there was a smaller article on cinematreasures.org. It has numerous listings for past/present cinemas in HK, detailing their history and and none other than Raymond Lo (the batgung cinema expert) gets a mention as the main contributor for HK related cinema information. Excellent stuff Raymond.
re: SCMP
Hi Phil, Looks like you can finally cancel the newspaper subscription, and get everything you need here at batgung!! From the 'Where to find Hong kong's History page':
For Hong Kong's cinemas, Raymond Lo has obviously done a lot of research. He has added historical notes for many of Hong Kong's cinemas at the Cinema Treasures website.
And from the 'Photos of old Hong Kong':
The HKU Museum on Bonham Road is running an exhibition of 100 old photos from Cheng Po Hung on this topic, from now until 28 June. Details here.
Maybe someone at SCMP is a batgung reader?!
It's great to see them both getting some well-deserved publicity. I've mentioned it before, but Raymond's detailed knowledge of cinemas and film showing times is invaluable when trying to date old photos.
The HKU exhibition has a companion book with even more photos than are on display. It wasn't available for sale when I visited, but I should check again to see if it's ready yet.
Cheers, MrB
aha, yes indeed. I think the
aha, yes indeed. I think the only time I would consider a subscription is if VIRJOY suddenly run out of 100% virgin pulp :-)
Anyway, seems as though I am preaching to the converted. Shame the SCMP can't be bothered to acknowledge it's true source - that stuff is repeated almost verbatim in these articles.
