Hi There,

振隆白米used to be a landmark on Hollywood Road, but uncertain if it stayed in one location, or several along the road.  Need someone older to confirm.

Thanks tngan. According to this Historic Building Appraisal, 振隆白米 was at No. 62 before it ceased operation in 2005.

"Judging from their appearance, it is believed that No. 60 Hollywood Road was built in the 1920s which may also be the period when the other two shophouses (i.e. Nos. 62 and 64) were built."

"No. 62 is now used as a café, and old shop signs in terrazzo finish on the pillars at its shop front, bearing Chinese characters “振隆白米生油” and “振隆白米生油柴炭”, indicate that the shop was once a grocery store named “振隆” which ceased operation in 2005."

Hi there,

I was able to find clues of older images of Google Street View dated 2009, with a verticle sign of 振隆白米still on the wall next to the cafe/bar on the left hand side.  However I wonder if it is just me or is it something else, the direction of the steps on the pavement didn't seem to add up.  That was why I raised if there was another address of the shop.

Unfortunately the focus point seem to be on the vehicle.  If the name of the pawn shop is clear enough we may be able to get more clues.

ps    A further investigation of another shop sign (友生昌) is confirmed to be located at the junction of Peel  Hollywood.   I guess the road surface of Hollywood may have been re-surfaced some time ago making it looked different?

If this photo was taken at the same time as this one, then it may be around 10th October 1938. It's cool enough to wear long sleeved garments. In the mid-distance there seems to be a crowd gathered round in a semi-circle - perhaps a street performance?

Am I correct to say one is looking west on Hollywood Road with Peel Street sloping downwards from left to right ? If it is Hollywood Road, that is the only location I can think of where those ascending steps on the right are.

Hi There,

The rice store should be on the southern side of Hollywood Road, next to Kung Lei herbal tea store.  The orientation of the shop signs appeared to be correct in the photo above.  I just felt something is off.

振隆白米 has a FB page operated by the founders' family. I have reached out to see if they could shed any light on their exact location(s) over the years. May very well be that they moved along, or to the opposite side of Hollywood Road? Will report back if I get a response.

Thanks for all your input! The steps, sloping direction and clothing etc..... I am still learning to spot the previously unnoticed details that are so interesting.

Regarding the crowd, could it be that people were lining up for rice? Was there a shortage due to the Japanese invasion in the Mainland?
