the oldest escalator in Hong Kong, still in active use

For music lovers, this escalator may be a familiar sight. This entrance location possibly began with some bronze-like finishing, classy deco [1], which led to the music shop from Uk.
Into the spacious floor, you may find records of almost all kinds of music and it had lasted for over a decade around the millenium.

It is the oldest public escalator still in active use in Hong Kong now. [2] It is located at ground floor of the Central Building. In fact, the building was completed in two phases,
the first section near Gloucester Building by March 1958. [3] Inset in above photo shows an artistic illustration with the elevator.

Information on the internet says its completion year is unsure (whether 1958 or 1960). But I think with the more information available, it may be further clarified. [4]

In the present day, this goes all the way to the open space over Landmark's atrium, and beyond.
Of greater interests, here may be a bypath to promenade into this historical space with natural light, across a 2nd-floor altitude. Not just the Gluocester Building (1932-1977).
Actually, stretch from Queen's Road Central to the atrium, up to the then praya, had been housed under one roof, across time, the once Hongkong Hotel (full scope c.1892). [5]

This is a rather quiet, comfortable walk. In a less congested CBD nowadays, there is more room to pause, look and feel in between 130 years... as you'd like.

1. searched but no early photos of it could be found in the public domain yet
2. It is possibly still in original form and infrastructure of this vendor.
Meanwhile, the first escalator in Hong Kong was installed in the Man Yee Building at 67 QRC in 1957, but the building was redeveloped in the 1990s. See also [3] for its photo.

Hi There,

If Escalaters are concerning, I believe the old Wing On Department Store had been one of the early users back then.  They were still in used back in the 1960's before being re-developed into the current highrise.

Hi T, thanks for enriching more info.

The second oldest escalator(s) still exist may be related to a multi-storey department store indeed, in North Point but from the 70s. However, they are also disappearing, as the store counts down to close by end of June. The date to re-open is said to be unsure at this moment. A common sight streetwise nowadays.
