My father, Arthur Peill, was a Lay Missionary 1937-1941. He was sent by the CMS to be apprentice to Canon Wittenbach. After enlisting in the RAF in the last year of the war, he returned  to Hong Kong with my mother, Margaret, and I, first to the Civil Service, and then as the second to last Manager of the Dairy Farm at Pokfulam, where we spent some wonderful years together as a family.

Henry August Wittenbach married Hannah Gertrude Blanchett in Christ Church at Shameen, on 10 April 1928. Hannah Blanchett was the eldest daughter of Rev. Charles Isaac Blanchett and Annie Walsh of the Church Missionary Society based in Canton. The wedding was mentioned here in the Hong Kong Telegraph the following day.

Wittenbach hailed from Melbourne and studied for Holy Orders in Ridley College. He was ordained deacon 1923 and priest in 1924. After a short period of curacy in St. Mark's Church, Melbourne, he left Australia in January 1926 and proceeded to the Holy Trinity College in Canton. He became Principal of the College from 1928 to 1930. In 1931, he was appointed Acting Warden of St. Andrew's Hostel in Canton Union Theological College.

Rev. Wittenbach later came to Hong Kong and was the Rector of St. Andrew's Church, Kowloon prior to the Japanese invasion. After the fall of Hong Kong, he was interned with his wife and two small children at Stanley Camp.

H. A. Wittenbach's name/signature appears in light brown just above bottom left of the "Day Joyce Sheet" held by the Imperial War Museum.
