老香港 - Old Hong Kong Photos & Stories

A free, illustrated talk held at Milford Haven library, 2:30pm-4pm on Wednesday, 6 November.

Travel 6,000 miles to the Far East, and over 100 years back in time to explore old Hong Kong through this selection of rare photos. The photos come from the albums of British soldiers, sailors, and civil servants who were posted to this distant British colony. It was an exciting place to be, but also dangerous and often deadly. Come along to hear their stories.

Speaker: David Bellis grew up locally in Milford Haven, but later moved to Hong Kong where he lived for over 30 years. He founded www.gwulo.com, a website about Hong Kong’s history which has grown to over 50,000 pages, including over 30,000 historic photos. David has published five books and given a series of popular talks on this topic. He recently moved back to Pembrokeshire.

Address: Milford Haven Library, Cedar Court, Haven's Head Business Park, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, SA73 3LS

Travel: There is free parking available at the site if you’re driving, or the bus stop (get off at the Tesco stop) and railway station are a short walk away if you’re taking public transport.

Registration: No registration is needed, just come along on the day.

Further information: If you have any questions, please leave a comment below or call the library at 01437-771-888

I was very interested in your November talk.  I worked for the Hong Kong Bank in Hong Kong.

I live near Worcester - a three hour journey - so unfortunately it’s too far to travel.

Is there any possibility of this talk being given at a location a little nearer our neck of the woods?

Many thanks,

Peter Hale

I would be interested as well - Milford Haven is a bit far- based in Cheltenham. Also a member of the local HK Society so maybe you can do a talk at one of our gatherings.

Further to my earlier note.

Would it be possible to do a “Zoom” version of this talk? - as was done very often by clubs etc during Covid.

Gentlemen, thank you for your replies. I don't plan to do this talk via Zoom, but I'll be sure to announce in the newsletter if there are future talks in other locations.

Regards, David
