The 1949 Hong Kong Annual Report notes "the popular B. O. A. C. flying boat service to the United Kingdom and Japan ceased in September and was replaced by a land plane service over a similar route, thereby reducing the time to London to three days."

Checked my Dad's logbook 2/6/47....Plymouth class GAHYY "Portsmouth"

HKG-BANGKOK..8hrs  onto RANGOON..2hrs44m..onto CALCUTTA..4hrs18m..onto KARACHI..8hrs

onto BAHRAIN..7hrs23m  onto BASRA 3hrs onto CAIRO..6hrs48m onto AUGUSTA..6hrs44m

onto MARIGNANE..4hrs56m  finally POOLE..4hrs53m  ariving 8/6/4

He records 24/8/49 last flying boat HKG/MANILA  29/8/49 last flying boat to and from Japan..HKG/YOKOHAMA

So he's operating to Manila 3 days after i was born....wow different world then!!

Related to the development of the Hong Kong Route.

"After the war, B. O. A. C. set about the task of rebuilding Britain's airlines throughout the world and the Hong Kong route was reopened by the 'Hythe' flying boats in 1946. The journey time was five days.

In 1949, the Corporation introduced Argonaut airliners which cut the journey time to three days."

It's quite a change Moddsey once they fly Argonauts on the route.

Looking at Dad's logbooks he went to that fleet in 1949 and for the crew it seems to have taken them 4 days.

This was due to crew rest at Karachi, then they flew a different aircraft onto HK.
