JOHN DURRAN, MB 1924, FRCSED, DO: in Helensburgh, 16th February 1984, aged 84. Dr Durran was born in Kirriemuir and educated at Berkhamsted School and Daniel Stewart's College, Edinburgh. He saw brief service in 1918 as an officer cadet in the Royal Field Artillery. After graduating with honours in 1924 and winning the Mouat medal for the practice of physic he became a houseman in the eye wards of Edinburgh Roval Infirmary. He then signed on as a ship's doctor for a voyage to Hangkow. In Hong Kong he was persuaded to join a firm there and after gaining the DO and FRCSED on successive leaves home he became the opthalmological specialist in the firm. From the 1941 siege until 1945 Dr Durran served in Bowen Road Military Hospital and in 1946 returned to the United Kingdom to become a consultant at Leicester Royal Infirmary. In 1954, however, he returned to Scotland to become Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Perthshire General Hospitals.
