In 1962 a combined primary school, maternity centre and nursery was built in Shing Tak Street, To Kwa Wan, Kowloon, to serve a daughter church of the Emmanuel Mission Church in Nathan Road. The Emmanuel Chinese Church was inaugurated and it used the auditorium of the school for meetings. From October of that year, it held Cantonese gospel gatherings to reach the residents of To Kwa Wan District. It was initially a youth gathering on Sunday evening, and later turned into an evening worship service.
In 1971 it became independent, financially and administratively from the mother church. It is one of several Chinese daughter churches of the original church, all of which sought to carry on the traditions of medical care and education set by the mother church.
