There was a cafe on Cheung Sha Wan Road a few shops east of the Maple Street Playground. It could be a coincidence, but I think the owner named it after the school he had attended - 嶺 南餐廳. I had their sandwiches with tea in the early 1950s. OldTimer.
Lingnan or 嶺南 is the general area south of the the "five mountains (五嶺)" in China. The name existed already in ancient times. There is nothing special about it. There is a poem by a famous literary figure in the Sung Dynasty 蘇軾(1037-1101). It contains the following:
日啖荔枝三百顆,不辭長作嶺南人
or I want to be a Lingnan guy forever so that I can enjoy 300 lychees every day.
Lingnan includes the modern day Guangdong and Guangxi. These places were regarded as less civilized in ancient times far from the central government. Officials were sent there as punishment if they did something wrong or rather the emperor doesn't like. 蘇軾 was one of them.
