譚寶鈞 Tam Po Kwan
The sign at the top left corner should be of 譚寶鈞 *Tam Po-kwan. Tam Po-kwan was a famous Chinese medicine practitioner in Hong Kong and was also the head of the China College of Chinese Medicine 中國國醫學院 since the 1950s. The location of this sign may be his clinic in the pre-war time.
address
According to 1950 年香港年鑑, address of 譚寶鈞 Tam Po-kwan. was 176 queen road central second floor.
Re: Photo
The above address may well be correct. Not conclusive yet but the photo identification numbers or frame reference numbers for the photo sequence I.e. the before and after photos seem to suggest Wanchai around Johnston Road.
likely at Johnston Road
In fact, four Harrison Forman's photos are under Original Item ID 5014.
Digital ID of this one is fr200243.
For fr200244, it shows the wide view of the Southorn Playground area. The other two were also taken around Johnston Road.
While for fr200242 (#5015), it shows shops at the beginning part of Johnston Road.
The Mak Man & Co., Furniture Decoration (麥文, leftmost shop) was at 58 Johnston Road, c.1938.
On maximum zoom from the uwm website, we could see a cinema handbill of Hong Kong Grand Cinema 香港大戲院 on the wall (3rd shop from the left). The cinema was at 181 Queen's Road East, which is in proximity.
Tam Po Kwan first opened on upper floor of 155 Des Vouex Road Central in 1939. ^ In the past, it is quite common that Chinese herb doctors like to use their residence on 1/F as the clinic also, possibly up to the 1970s. These few Forman photos also show such examples, e.g. posted on gwulo here. 寓 is a frequently used word in the shop sign (which may mean residence).
Will explore one more observation recurring in these Wanchai street scenes in the next post.
