I have not been able to obtain any pertinent information on Vera (de Carvalho) Reed other than her marriage to Francis Reed in October, 1941. I believe she was originally from Shanghai and that she did remarry.  I would certainly be interested in knowing more about her life after Francis should any information surface.

Thank you for the information on Vera's parents.  Vera married Francis Oswald Reed in October 1941.  Francis was killed in December of that year while fighting in the war. If she was indeed engaged to Francis' younger brother Reginard John Reed it would have been a short engagement as Reggie was a prisoner of war for over three years.  He departed for London in 1946 to participate in the Great Victory Parade. Reggie met and married his first wife Rita in London where he was working.  He married his second wife Gladys in 1957 after he moved to Rhyl, Wales.

Reggie was released from Shamshuipo Camp on September 2, 1945.  It seems unlikely that he would have gotten engaged to his brother Francis' widow within a month of his release.  To my knowledge, I never heard about this from my parents.  My cousin Mary also did not recall hearing of this engagement.  Reggie lived with us at the 244 Nathan Road flat after his release, before leaving for London in June.  There is the possibility of course that Reggie and Vera might have stayed in touch during his internment, leading to some commitment made in the months before he left for London.

The photo of Francis and Vera shown above was probably taken in 1941, either before or after their wedding.

In going through family photos recently, I noticed that my mother's written comments at the back of the photo shown above indicated Vera was dressed in her going-away outfit.  The couple spent their honeymoon in Macau, so this photo was taken in October 1941, following their wedding.

My mother wrote at the back of the wedding photo only the month and year of the wedding but not the actual date, unfortunately.  She did write that the wedding was held at 3 p.m. at St. Margaret's Church!

David, I hope you can add the correct year to the photo of the couple, thanks!

Ann, thank you for your post regarding a Gustavo de Carvalho and Vera de Carvalho, Brazilian citizens, being on the passenger list from Rio to Southampton in 1912.  I don't believe they are related in any way to Vera de Carvalho who married Francis Reed in October, 1941.  Vera was born on January 1, 1921, in Hong Kong.  Her parents were Duarte and Maria de Carvalho, nee Botelho, both born in Hong Kong.
