R. E. Stott, a land bailiff, was fighting with the Volunteers on the Peak at the time of the surrender. Soon after he was diagnosed with a duodenal ulcer, and eventually ended up at the French Hospital. He escaped from there on August 11, 1942.
He appears as "Robert Edward" in the Jurors List for 1923, "Robert" in the next few years' lists, then "Robert Edgar" in the list for 1928.
He wrote an article for The China Mail, on 1946-12-31 (see pages 4 & 5). It noted "I myself have been with them ((Chinese people)) for twenty six years", so he must have arrived in Hong Kong (or possibly China) in 1920.

1943 7th Rajputs Indian Army posted to movement control unit India.
Seconded to M.I5 1944 operating on the China Front. Seconded to Security control 1945 to clear up Chinatown and control gangsters and extortioners. Naval Military 848 Scottish blue lodge MM.
This distinguished record suggests that the main motivation for his escape was to get back into the war.
