Anna Maria Bond's parents were Rodrigues and Faustina Rosario. [CS card 0008307 GIF] Her name was given as Anna Maria Diaz in 1861 at the time of her marriage to Robert Reed by whom she had two children, Lucretia and Amaro. Reed died in 1873. After his death when she was already 38, she married Charles Bond, a French Canadian, a man of many parts, who had also spent 10 years in the Hong Kong police. Anna may have thought she would have no more children, but they had a daughter, Margaret when Anna was 41.
The Ladies Directory of 1905 gives Mrs A.M. Bond, Miss M.A. Bond (daughter), Mrs P.H. Murray (daughter) and Mrs. A.J. Reed (daughter-in-law) all living at "Belvoir", 165 Wanchai Road, which must have been quite a big household, depending on the number of children. (I think the Murrays had three by this time). In 1911 Anna Bond bequeathes 165 Wanchai Road [I.L. 1551 Section B] to her spinster daughter Margaret Annie Bond, 167 Wanchai Road [I.L. 1551 Section A] to her son Amaro John Reed and [I.L. 1551 remaining part] to her daughter, Lucretia Mary Murray. These properties were on a Crown Lease taken out in 1899 and returned to the Crown in 1924.
My interest in Mrs L.M Murray began with finding that she was the owner of "Merville", 161 Wanchai Road in 1915, which was where my grandmother's stepmother, Ellen Olson died. It seems that the family had several properties in Wanchai Road. Lucretia's husband, Patrick died at a different house in the Wanchai Road. The Murrays and the Warrens (my grandparents) both lived in Morrison Hill Road when they were young parents and later in 7 and 20 Broadwood Road respectively.
I imagine Portuguese naming practice follows Spanish. A Spaniard will often have two surnames, one from their mother and one from their father - for example the Spanish tennis player, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, - but a woman may take only her mother's surname. I assume that Diaz was Anna Maria's mother's family name.
Jill, this seems to address the question I also had as to why Anna Maria's last name was given as Diaz instead of Rosario when she married my great grandfather, Robert Reed in 1861.
Regarding Robert Reed, I just read the new postings. It is certainly confusing re the dates but interesting as well. I have not seen the image of the grave but it does make more sense that he died at 38 instead of 28. In my last response to you I did mention that Amaro's youngest son Reggie went to the town in Scotland to try and look up family relatives. He had some address but letters sent to that address went unanswered. Reggie left for London after the war (work-related I believe) and then settled in Wales, so it would have been easier for him to travel to Scotland at that time. I appreciate everyone's feedback on Robert Reed as I have no information about him and certainly regret that I did not ask more questions about the family background.
Angie, if you click on the highlighted words in eurasian_david's post in the Robert Reed stream, https://gwulo.com/comment/57177#comment-57177 an image of his grave will come up that can be enlarged. The masonic design is very distinctive. Some of the lettering is very tiny. If you also click on the highlighted "this" and "this" in eurasian_david's next post you will get the references to the documents relating to Robert Reed's probate document and a document connected with his employment. If the Reeds are still interested in following up their ancestor they can apply for these documents through the Public Records Office website. You will see that annpake is trying to find Robert Reed through "Scotland's People" with your helpful tip that he might have been known as Jack. Perhaps the Reeds can dig up a memory of the town Reggie Reed visited or the rough address to which he wrote. People sometimes don't want to make contact with unknown relatives.

DoB & maiden name
CS card 00135689.GIF says Anna Maria was 38 when she married Charles Bond in 1875, so I've set her date of birth to be c. 1837.
Any ideas why she's listed as Anna Maria Diaz, when her parents' surname was Rosario? Shouldn't she be Anna Maria Rosario?
