Kowloon from the Tai Po Road

Apologies for the lack of definition but this photograph was on one of my films that was over developed.

Following a speedy response from Phil, I have now re-titled this with its correct viewpoint.  In spite of the poor quality of the image he has also identified several buildings.

I think this was actually taken from Tai Po Road. Castle Peak Road is actually in view amongst the buildings.

Centre right is the dark image of a building being constructed (completed in 1959) that still stands on the block that sits between Fuk Wing and Fuk Wa Streets where they intersect with Castle Peak Road. I don't know the name of the building but the two blocks are separated by a small alley called Kim Shin Lane. You can see the Castle Peak Road end of the alley being formed as the construction is going up.

The prominent building in the foreground right, facing camera, is also still around. It's #50 Wing Hong Street and was opened in various stages throughout 1958.

I would put you somewhere along Tai Po Road between the modern day developments of "Triaza" and "Bamboo Villa" site.

Many thanks Phil for identifying the right viewpoint.  As always, your local knowledge is superb. I have a vague feeling that you grew up in the Tai Po Market area.  If so,do you recognise any of the children on my recent uploads?  It would be great if somebody contacted Gwulo with, "Goodness me. That's me / my father / even my grandfather."  Regards  Andrew

Hi Andrew

My wife's family lived in Taipo during the 50s and 60s but moved to the UK when my wife was a baby in the early 70s. I did live there for 6 or so years when I first moved over but by then it had become a "New Town" and changed drastically. I used to be a member of a Taipo group on Facebook and I know there was a lot of interest in your photos there amongst the local members but I haven't had a FB account for several years so don't know if they still check here. I imagine they do and might be able to comment if anyone recognises the subjects.

Hi Phil,

We'll just have to keep our fingers crossed.  It would be wonderful to be able to provide people with a connection to their family history.  Andrew
