The China Emporium now occupies the site of the old Chinese Club but the large shops below were, formerly occupied by Falconer's the jewellers, and others with residences upstairs. The building that housed the Travellers Hotel to the westward still stands, but the premises adjoining, in which were the offices and dwellings of the Pacific Mail S.S.Co., have undergone alteration.

Hi there,
Concisering the size of the buliding I think it might be the predecessor of the present day Crawford House. That seemed to be the only building big enough.
Best Regards,

Hi T,
Yes, China Emporium was at the site of the present-day Crawford House. Please see the photographs in Posts 1982 to 1984 of this thread:
I had no idea there was a building with a Chinese-style tower on Queen's Road Central.
According to internet sources, the China Emporium was founded in 1929 and went out of business in the mid-1970s.

Crawford House currently occupies the site of China Emplorium. It was a department store with side entrance on Stanley Street at the back. I think it was a subsidiary of Wheelock. When Lane Crawford Dept store moved out from Telephone House in 1975 period, it was relocated to the Queens's Rd site. Wheelock exchanged Telephone House with HK Land for Jardine House (now Wheelock House). Telephone House became part of the Landmark.

It was located at 70 Queen's Road Central, Central, Hong Kong. Later Lane Crawford Emporium 連卡佛百貨 took over the site.

It was 建國酒樓 on the top floor. The noodles were handmade with limited quantity every day. It was the first time I saw noodle dough kneaded with a long bamboo stick. They made cold noodle stirred with chicken - heaven!
One of my old teachers - missed him - took me there often in the 1960's. The lower floors then were already taken by 連卡佛百貨公司 (Lane Crawford Emporium).
